Jefferson Airplane est un groupe de rock américain issu de San Francisco, et l'un des précurseurs du mouvement rock psychédélique.Il est rattaché au mouvement "San Francisco Sound"

Jefferson Airplane acquit sa place au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 1996.

Le terme Jefferson airplane est aussi une expression argotique anglo-saxonne désignant l'utilisation d'une allumette usagée pour tenir une cigarette de marijuana lorsqu'elle est devenue trop courte pour ne pas se brûler les doigts. Une légende urbaine prétend que c'est l'origine du nom du groupe. Cependant, selon Jorma Kaukonen, membre du groupe, le nom a été inventé par l'un de ses amis (Steve Talbot) lorsqu'il était à Berkeley, en référence à l'un des pionniers du blues : Blind Lemon Jefferson.
